What a work by Carroll Dunham is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Carroll Dunham was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1949 and grew up in Old Lyme. He graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, in 1972, moved to New York the following year and worked as an assistant to the painter Dorothea Rockburne. His first solo exhibition was at Artists Space, New York, in 1981. From 1981 to 1987 he painted on wood veneer and plywood, letting the grain shape the forms, and his work has moved between abstraction and figuration ever since, from biomorphic, cartoon-like shapes to recurring subjects such as hatted men, trees, nude bathers and wrestlers. He also draws, makes prints and monotypes, and has made sculpture. The New Museum, New York, held a mid-career survey in 2002, and the Art Institute of Chicago showed his drawings from 1974 to 2024 in 2026. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate and Museum Ludwig, Cologne. He lives and works in New York and Cornwall, Connecticut.

Dunham has made unique paintings on linen and on wood, a large body of drawings, some sculpture, and prints and monotypes. For a print, note the edition number, the publisher or printer, the paper and the signature. Drawings and other works on paper fade in strong light, and the painted surfaces should be checked for scratches and abrasion. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with any piece.
