Charlotte Keates is a British painter working in oil and acrylic on board and canvas, whose subject is architectural space — mid-century interiors, poolsides, timber and glass houses, Californian and Scandinavian in flavour — assembled from photographs, memory and invention rather than drawn from a single place. The rooms are almost always empty, and the flattened perspective and heightened colour keep them just the wrong side of plausible.
