What a work by David Salle is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
David Salle was born in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1952, grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and studied at the California Institute of the Arts from 1970 to 1975, where John Baldessari taught him. In New York he worked for Vito Acconci, began showing with Mary Boone, and by the early 1980s was, with Julian Schnabel, the most talked-about painter of his generation. His paintings set unrelated images side by side and on top of one another, cartoon figures, nudes, furniture, adverts, details from Old Masters and passages of abstraction, in different styles and often across joined panels, so that they behave like montage in film. He belongs to the Pictures Generation, the artists who made the borrowed image their subject. He has also designed sets and costumes for the choreographer Karole Armitage, directed the film Search and Destroy in 1995, and written criticism, collected in How to See in 2016.
Paintings from the early and mid 1980s, the years that made his name, carry the most weight, and the date and the exhibition history place a canvas within the series he has worked through since. Multi-panel works must be complete, with inserts and attached objects present. He has made a great many prints, lithographs, etchings and screenprints in editions, as well as watercolours, drawings and photographs, and these come up far more often than paintings. A record through Mary Boone, Gagosian, Skarstedt or Thaddaeus Ropac, his galleries over the years, supports a work's history.
Wichita, CalArts and Mary Boone
His first solo museum exhibition was at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1983. A retrospective opened at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1999 and travelled to Vienna, Turin and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
His work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
