What a work by Salvo is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Salvo (1947–2015) was born Salvatore Mangione in Leonforte, Sicily, and moved with his family to Turin in 1956; he lived and worked there for the rest of his life. From 1968 he spent time with the Arte Povera artists around the gallery of Gian Enzo Sperone, shared a studio with Alighiero Boetti until 1971. His early works include photomontages that set his own face into newspaper images, shown in his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Sperone in 1970, and marble slabs carved with words and phrases, among them Salvo è vivo. In 1973 he returned to painting and never gave it up again, first with simplified versions of works by Renaissance masters into which he sometimes inserted himself, then with maps of Italy and Sicily lettered with famous names. From 1976 he painted landscapes in brilliant colour, with horsemen among ruins and classical columns seen at different times of day and night. He took part in Documenta 5 in 1972 and the Venice Biennale in 1976 and 1988, and the Museum Folkwang in Essen gave him a retrospective in 1977.

Besides the paintings he made photographs, marble inscriptions and drawings. A buyer will want the title, date and signature, any exhibition labels and the gallery invoice, and smooth, bright paint should be checked in good light for scratches and retouching.
