What a work by Geoffrey Holder is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Geoffrey Holder (1930–2014) was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and made his debut at seven in the dance company of his older brother, the painter and dancer Boscoe Holder. Invited to New York by the choreographer Agnes de Mille, he taught at Katherine Dunham's school, danced as a principal with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in 1955 and 1956, and went on to a long career on stage and screen: he won two Tony Awards, for directing The Wiz and for its costumes, and played Baron Samedi in the James Bond film Live and Let Die. Throughout, he was a prolific painter, mostly of figures and portraits of Black men and women, and in 1956 he won a Guggenheim Fellowship in fine arts. In 2024 Victoria Miro in London showed his paintings alongside his brother's.
Paintings on canvas and works on paper both appear. A signature, a date and any record of where the work was bought are worth gathering, and canvases should be checked for flaking paint and old repairs.
