Loie Hollowell
Symmetrical bodily abstraction in radiating colour, built out in low relief from the panel.
Loie Hollowell was born in Woodland, California in 1983 and studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara and at Virginia Commonwealth University. The paintings are strictly symmetrical about a central vertical axis and use a small vocabulary of forms — the lozenge, the ogee, the sphere, the mandorla — in radiating bands of graduated colour, so that the reference to the body is unmistakable while nothing is depicted. Pregnancy, childbirth and post-partum experience have driven whole series. Many works are built out from the surface in low relief using sawdust and high-density foam under the paint.
Hollowell's market rose very rapidly from around 2018, principally through Pace, and was volatile at auction in the years that followed, so date of acquisition and provenance carry weight. The paintings are unique, and the relief construction means they are physically deeper than they look and require particular care in handling and shipping; edge damage to the built-up areas is difficult to repair invisibly. Works on paper in pastel and coloured pencil are numerous and are the accessible part of the output. Print editions exist in small numbers.
