Goldie valuation
One of Britain's best-known graffiti writers of the 1980s, before he became a defining figure in drum and bass.
Goldie, born Clifford Price in Wolverhampton in 1965, was among the best-known graffiti writers in Britain in the mid-1980s, painting in Wolverhampton and Birmingham and travelling to New York; he appears in the 1987 documentary Bombin'. He went on to music, founding the Metalheadz label and releasing Timeless in 1995, one of the landmark records of drum and bass. He has kept painting throughout, making canvases and prints in a style that comes straight out of graffiti.
Canvases, works on paper and editioned prints come to market, and interest in the work is closely bound up with the music career, which makes provenance important. Signed editions should be checked against their edition details and publisher; signed music memorabilia is a separate category and does not carry the same weight as an artwork. For canvases, title, date and dimensions matched to documentation — an exhibition, a gallery invoice — establish the work, and spray-painted surfaces should be checked for abrasion.
