Hijack valuation
Los Angeles stencil work, and the son of the man who made Exit Through the Gift Shop.
Hijack is a Los Angeles street artist working anonymously, whose stencil and spray work appeared across that city from the early 2010s. He is the son of Thierry Guetta, the figure at the centre of Banksy's Exit Through the Gift Shop, which is a fact the market is aware of and which cuts both ways: it brought early attention and it invites the question of how much of the reputation is inherited. The work itself is stencil-led, often pairing a recognisable cultural image with a small subversion.
Unique works on canvas, mixed media on board, and screenprint editions, several of them hand-finished. As with most stencil artists working in editions, the distinction between a standard impression, a hand-finished one and a unique canvas using the same image is the whole of the valuation, and photographs of the sheet edge and the reverse are usually what settles it. Certificates accompany most editioned work and should travel with it.
