What a work by Jason Martin is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Jason Martin was born in Jersey, in the Channel Islands, in 1970, and graduated from Goldsmiths in 1993, a contemporary there of the Young British Artists. While still a student he began dragging thick oil paint or acrylic gel across grounds of aluminium, steel or Plexiglas with a comb-like tool of his own making, so that one movement leaves a field of ridges and furrows, a close-up of a single brushstroke that also reads as landscape. He has refined the method ever since, from thin glazes through which the metal shines to deep, sculptural reliefs. He was included in Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection at the Royal Academy in 1997 and had his New York debut at the Robert Miller Gallery the following year. He lives and works in London and Portugal.
The paintings are monochrome and depend on their surface, so dents in the metal, scratches on Plexiglas and damage to the raised ridges of paint all affect value; they should be hung, lit and moved with care, and should not be cleaned with solvents. The date and the support identify a work, and a provenance through the Saatchi collection, Lisson Gallery or Thaddaeus Ropac adds to it.
