Eddie Martinez was born in Connecticut in 1977, is largely self-taught, and paints quickly and physically — oil, enamel, spray and collage pushed around the canvas with a draughtsman's speed. The work sits in a line that runs through Abstract Expressionism and CoBrA and takes in graffiti and cartooning on the way, and the recurring motifs, particularly the tabletop still lifes and the block-head figures, give a large and varied output its coherence.
Unique paintings lead by a distance, with drawings — which are numerous, and central to the practice rather than preparatory — and a smaller body of editions below. Mixed media is the condition question: enamel, spray and oil dry and age at different rates on the same surface, and collaged elements can lift, so a close look matters more than for a single-medium painting. The market rose steeply in the late 2010s, which makes acquisition date and paperwork relevant to a valuation.
