Joakim Ojanen was born in Sweden in 1985 and makes paintings, drawings and — most distinctively — sculpture in glazed stoneware and bronze: slumped, big-nosed, long-limbed characters whose expressions sit between comedy and melancholy. The drawing sensibility carries straight into three dimensions, and the ceramic surfaces are heavily and deliberately glazed.
The market divides by material and this matters more than usual. Glazed ceramic is unique or near-unique, and it chips, crazes and breaks; a repaired ceramic is worth substantially less and the repair will be found. Bronzes are editioned and carry cast numbers and foundry marks, and are far more robust. Paintings and works on paper sit alongside. For any ceramic, condition should be established properly and packing for transit is not a place to economise — this is the category where damage in transit most often happens.
