What a work by Nick Oberthaler is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Nick Oberthaler was born in Bad Ischl, Austria, in 1981, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the École supérieure des beaux-arts in Geneva, and lives and works in Brussels. Since 2020 he has been professor of painting at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Lyon. His paintings, in acrylic on canvas, aluminium and paper, use a reduced, technical-looking language of flat planes, bands and edges, often in iridescent signal colours, that borrows from image theory, digital screens and the codes of institutions. Window and landscape are never far away. He looks to Blinky Palermo, Marthe Wéry and James Bishop, and tests where a painting begins and ends, swapping frame and picture plane and hanging works in sequences that answer the room. He was in Minimal Myth at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2012 and RIDEAUX/blinds at the Institut d'Art Contemporain in Villeurbanne in 2015.

His works are often made as parts of a sequence or for a particular space, so it should be clear whether a work stands alone or belongs to a group, and the installation photographs from its exhibition help. Flat, unvarnished acrylic surfaces and aluminium supports mark easily and should be handled with gloves. Thaddaeus Ropac represents him.
