What a work by Joseph Yaeger is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Joseph Yaeger was born in Helena, Montana, in 1986. He took a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and studied painting at the Royal College of Art in London, graduating in 2019, and he lives and works in London. He paints in watercolour on thickly gessoed canvas or linen, letting the pitted, uneven gesso and the movement of the pigment shape the image. He works on the floor, without sketches or a projector, from reference images chosen for a mix of attraction and disquiet, often film stills. The compositions are tightly cropped: charged encounters between unidentified figures in hard-to-place settings, and also animals and everyday objects. He has had three solo exhibitions at Project Native Informant in London between 2020 and 2023, two at Antenna Space in Shanghai and one at The Perimeter in London in 2023, followed by Polygrapher at Modern Art in London in 2025 and Agita at Gladstone Gallery in New York in 2026. His work is in the collection of the Kistefos Museum in Jevnaker, Norway.

His paintings are unique works in watercolour on gessoed linen or canvas, and some include other materials such as studio debris, glass or leaves. Watercolour is sensitive to light and damp, and a thick gesso ground can crack or chip if the canvas is knocked, so a buyer will want to know how the work has been hung and stored. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with it.
