David Yarrow was born in Glasgow in 1966 and began as a sports photographer — the picture of Maradona holding the World Cup in 1986 was his, taken at twenty. The later career is wildlife and staged narrative photography, made with remote and near-camera techniques that put the lens implausibly close to the subject, and printed at considerable scale in high-contrast black and white. The staged American-West and Hollywood-inflected images are a more recent and heavily commercial strand alongside the wildlife.
The market is editioned photography and edition size is the whole of it: works are issued in defined runs at several sizes, and the same image in a small edition at large scale and a larger edition at small scale are quite different propositions. Certificates and edition numbering are essential and should never be separated. Large prints are usually face-mounted to acrylic, which is glossy, heavy, expensive to ship and scratches easily; condition and transit cost both need reckoning before a sale.
Edinburgh, The Times and the City
Yarrow is the son of Eric Yarrow, of the Yarrow shipbuilding family and chairman of the Clydesdale Bank from 1985 to 1991. While studying at Edinburgh University he was named Young Scottish Photographer of the Year, and in 1986 he covered the World Cup in Mexico for The Times; his photograph of Maradona holding up the trophy was syndicated around the world.
He then spent years in finance, as an institutional stockbroker in London and New York, director of equities at NatWest Securities from 1993 and then founder of the hedge fund Clareville Capital, before turning to photography full time. He has worked with Cara Delevingne and Cindy Crawford, and since 2021 has concentrated on staged narrative series such as Wild West.
