What a work by Zadie Xa is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Zadie Xa was born in Vancouver in 1983, raised by her mother, who had emigrated from South Korea, and took her BFA at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2007 before moving to London, where she took an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 2014. She lives and works in London. Her installations combine painting, sculpture, textiles, sound, light, video and performance into immersive environments about diasporic identity, family history and the relationship between humans and other species. She draws on Korean folklore and shamanism, with its women-led rituals, and on speculative fiction, pop culture and fashion; her own Pekingese dog reappears as the haetae of Korean myth, and shells collected on Jeju Island stand for a life on the move. Patchwork, after Korean quilting traditions, frames her paintings, and costumes are worn in performances and shown as works in their own right. She has worked with the artist Benito Mayor Vallejo since 2006, and was in the Venice Biennale of 2019. She won Canada's Sobey Art Award in 2020 and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2025.

Paintings, many of them in patchwork frames, and textile works are what most often change hands. Fabric fades, frays and attracts insects, and works combining paint and textile should be hung away from sunlight and checked for loose stitching and staining. Installation elements and costumes depend on their documentation. A work's date and series, and a provenance through Thaddaeus Ropac, which represents her, are the reference points.
