What a work by Jules de Balincourt is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Jules de Balincourt was born in Paris in 1972, moved to Los Angeles with his family in the early 1980s and grew up near Malibou Lake in the Santa Monica Mountains. He studied ceramics at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, graduating in 1998, and took his MFA at Hunter College in New York in 2005, and in 2006 he founded Starr Space, an alternative art and community venue in Bushwick, Brooklyn. He paints mostly on wood panel, usually without photographs or preparatory drawings, using stencils, tape, knives and spray paint as well as brushes. His early paintings questioned American power, technology and the media through innocent-looking scenes and lonesome cowboys, and through invented maps that ignore real borders; later work turned to explosions of colour and then to crowds of small figures gathered at night, in jungles, on beaches and around fires, places without a fixed time or location, which recall the Nabis and the Bay Area figurative painters he admired in California. He divides his time between Brooklyn and Costa Rica.

The paintings are usually oil on panel, from small to very large, and their worked surfaces of scraped and sprayed paint should be checked for scratches, losses and damage at the edges of the panel. The date, the title and the exhibition history place a work in his output, and early paintings of the mid-2000s, from the years of Greater New York and USA Today, are a distinct group. Thaddaeus Ropac represents him.
