What a work by Giacomo Balla is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Giacomo Balla (1871–1958) was born in Turin, where he studied at the Accademia Albertina and took an early interest in photography, which his father, a chemist, had pursued. In 1895 he moved to Rome, where he lived and worked from then on, and as a Divisionist painter he taught the technique to Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini. He signed the Manifesto of Futurist Painting in 1910 and became one of the movement's central figures, painting motion and light in Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash (1912), the Iridescent Interpenetrations and his studies of the speed of automobiles. In 1915 he and Fortunato Depero signed the manifesto Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe, and he designed furniture, clothing and stage sets and decorated his own home in Futurist style.

Balla made oil paintings, sculpture, drawings and studies on paper, and designs for furniture, clothing and interiors. A buyer will want the date of the work, its history of ownership and exhibition, and whether it is recorded in Giovanni Lista's catalogue of Balla's work, published in 1982. Works on paper should be checked for fading, staining and old repairs.
