What a work by Lina Iris Viktor is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Lina Iris Viktor was born in London to Liberian parents who had left Liberia during the civil war, and grew up partly in Johannesburg. She studied film at Sarah Lawrence College and photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her works combine photography, painting and gilding, laying 24-carat gold over grounds of matt black in dense patterns, often around photographs of herself in the guise of a sibyl or queen. Her series A Haven. A Hell. A Dream Deferred, shown at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 2018, takes Liberia's founding by freed Black Americans as its subject, with a title drawn from Langston Hughes. She showed in In the Black Fantastic at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2022, and that year moved to southern Italy.

Her gilded paintings first appeared at auction in 2021, and more have followed; provenance through her galleries and the condition of the gold leaf are the first questions.

London, New York and the Hayward

In 2018 she brought a copyright claim over imagery resembling her work in a music video for the Black Panther film soundtrack, and the dispute was settled.

Autograph in London gave her a solo exhibition in 2019, and her work is in the collection of the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College.
