Tunji Adeniyi-Jones was born in London in 1992 to Nigerian parents, studied at Oxford and Yale, and works in New York. The paintings are built on a recurring vocabulary of elongated, dancing, swimming figures in saturated colour, drawn from Yoruba mythology and from the way that imagery was absorbed and reframed by European modernism — so the pictures are about the transmission as much as the source.
Unique paintings on canvas lead, with works on paper and a limited output of editions below them. The paint is applied in flat, layered fields of strong colour, which shows handling marks and abrasion readily and makes framing and transit worth doing properly. This is a career that moved fast in the primary market, which makes provenance and acquisition date material to any valuation — the gap between primary and secondary prices has been wide, and paperwork is what anchors the discussion.
