What a work by Lynne Drexler is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Lynne Drexler (1928–1999) was born near Newport News, Virginia. She studied drama at the Richmond Professional Institute, graduating in 1949, and after an illness took art classes at the College of William & Mary. In 1956 she moved to New York to study with Hans Hofmann, and she also studied with Robert Motherwell at Hunter College. By 1959 she had found her signature brushwork, swatch-like strokes of contrasting colour set in dense clusters, and she often sketched at the opera and at concerts with a sketchpad and coloured crayons. Her first solo exhibition was at the Tanager Gallery in New York in 1961. In 1962 she married the painter John Hultberg, and their honeymoon in Maine introduced her to Monhegan Island, whose shapes and colours entered her work. The couple bought a summer house there in 1971, and by 1983 she lived on the island all year round. Her paintings were shown at the Portland Museum of Art in 2010, and in 2023 White Cube announced representation of the Lynne Drexler Archive.

Her work includes oil paintings on canvas, from abstractions to Monhegan landscapes, and works on paper. The paint is often thick and densely worked, so check for cracking and losses. A buyer will want the title and date of the work and details of where it came from, including any earlier gallery invoice.
