What a work by Magnus Plessen is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Magnus Plessen was born in Hamburg in 1967 and lives and works in Berlin. He worked first as a photographer and cameraman before turning to painting. His paintings move between figuration and abstraction: fragments of bodies, heads, arms, legs and hands, appear among everyday objects, set into the picture surface rather than placed in a space, so that figure and ground merge. Since 2014 he has worked on a series called 1914, about the wounded of the First World War, starting from Ernst Friedrich's pacifist book Krieg dem Kriege of 1924. He has had solo exhibitions at K21 in Düsseldorf in 2002, the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2004 and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid in 2012, and since 2019 he has taught a class at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe.

Paintings on canvas and works on paper both appear, and a gallery invoice and the date of the work place a painting within his output. Large canvases should be checked for abrasions and handling marks.
