What a work by Howardena Pindell is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Howardena Pindell was born in Philadelphia in 1943 and took a BFA at Boston University in 1965 and an MFA at Yale in 1967. That year she joined the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where she worked her way up to curator while making her own work at night. She co-founded A.I.R. Gallery and campaigned for women artists, Black women in particular. In the 1970s she developed a style built on dots, and by 1974 she was using a paper punch to cut out multitudes of small discs of card that she scattered over the surface of her paintings. Her work explores texture, colour, structure and the process of making, in abstract paintings, collages and what she called video drawings, and much of it is political, addressing racism, feminism, violence, slavery and exploitation.

Her abstract paintings and works on paper are layered with paper discs and other materials that can lift, shed or discolour, so condition should be checked closely. A gallery invoice and the date of the work place it within her output, and exhibition labels on the back are worth keeping.
