Nasty valuation
Paris Métro writer of the 1980s, who now cuts his letters into the city's own materials.
Nasty is a French graffiti writer who came up in the Paris Métro in the 1980s, part of the first European generation to take the New York subway tradition and make something local of it. The later studio work is distinctive for its supports: he has worked on fragments of the Métro itself — enamel plaques, maps, tiling — which brings the material of the city into the piece rather than depicting it.
Unique works on those reclaimed supports are the centre of the market, with canvases and editions alongside. Works incorporating found municipal material raise questions a straightforward canvas does not — what the fragment is, how it was obtained, and how stable it is — and those are worth settling before a sale rather than during one. Provenance from the gallery or the artist is the usual evidence. Condition on enamel, metal and ceramic supports is assessed against what those materials do with age rather than against perfection.
