Paints old photographs faithfully in grey, then puts one impossible thing in colour.
Paco Pomet was born in Granada in 1970 and studied fine art there, with time in New York. The paintings begin with a found photograph — a Depression-era street, a Victorian expedition, a class portrait, a piece of industrial machinery — reproduced in oil with the tonal fidelity of the original monochrome, and then interrupted: a figure inflated or stretched, a cartoon element, a passage of saturated colour where nothing should be coloured. The humour is dry and the effect is unsettling rather than funny, because the technique never breaks character. He works in Granada.
A market principally in Spain and the United States, developed through gallery representation with a comparatively short auction record, so provenance to the original gallery is the strongest documentation most works carry. Unique oils on canvas or panel lead, with the more elaborate multi-figure compositions ahead of the small studies. Print editions are published in modest numbers. The paintings are traditionally made in oil on prepared grounds and present no unusual conservation issues, which is uncommon in contemporary work and is worth noting in its favour.
