Charles Uzzell-Edwards, the dripping-eyed portraits, and a Shoreditch gallery that gave a generation its first show.
Pure Evil is Charles Uzzell-Edwards, a Welsh-born artist who spent the 1990s in California before returning to London, and whose best-known body of work is the Nightmare series: stencilled portraits of famous women and cultural figures with a single drip falling from one eye. He is also a gallerist, and the Pure Evil Gallery in Shoreditch gave early shows to a considerable number of the artists who now make up this market — which makes him a figure in the scene as well as a producer in it.
The Nightmare portraits exist as unique canvases, hand-finished works and screenprint editions in many colourways, and the volume is high. That volume is the thing to understand before valuing one: colourway, edition size, whether the work is unique or one of a run, and whether the drip and background are hand-applied all separate pieces that photograph almost identically. Signature and reverse markings are where the answer sits.
