Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Rachel Jones was born in Whitechapel, London, in 1991, to a Jamaican mother and a Barbadian father, and grew up in Brentwood, Essex. She took a BA in fine art at Glasgow School of Art in 2013 and an MA at the Royal Academy Schools in 2019, the year she won the André Dunoyer de Segonzac Hon RA Prize, and lives and works in London. Working in oil stick and oil pastel, she makes layered paintings in bright colour that move between abstraction and figuration, and the mouth and teeth recur as a way of speaking about her ethnicity and her experience as a Black woman. After residencies at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in 2016 and the Chinati Foundation in Marfa in 2019, she joined Thaddaeus Ropac following the group exhibition A Focus on Painting in 2020, and in 2021 she was among the youngest artists in Mixing It Up: Painting Today at the Hayward Gallery. In 2025 Dulwich Picture Gallery showed Gated Canyons. ICA Miami was the first American museum to acquire her work, which is also held by Tate, Arts Council England and the Hepworth Wakefield.
Her works are mostly paintings in oil stick and oil pastel on canvas, and she has also made sculpture. Oil pastel and oil stick stay soft and can smudge or hold dust, so check the surface closely and keep a work protected. The gallery invoice, with the title and date, should stay with it.
