James Jean valuation

James Jean was born in Taiwan, grew up in New Jersey and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2001. His covers for the comic series Fables and The Umbrella Academy won six Eisner Awards, and his commercial work has included murals and textiles for Prada. He has since concentrated on painting and printmaking — intricate, flowing compositions of figures, flora and myth — while still designing the occasional film poster and collaboration.
Prints are a large part of the market, released as giclées and screenprints in editions that often sell out on release, alongside original paintings and drawings, which are far scarcer. Edition size, printing method and any hand-embellishment separate one print from another, and signed editions need telling apart from open editions and posters of the same image. Comic cover art and original illustration are a distinct category, with provenance questions of their own.
