What a work by Rankin is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Rankin, born John Rankin Waddell in 1966, studied accountancy at Brighton Polytechnic before switching to photography at the London College of Printing, where he met Jefferson Hack. In 1991 the two founded Dazed & Confused, the magazine that did much to set the look of 1990s London, with Rankin's photographs at its centre. His portraits and fashion pictures, bright, close and often irreverent, have taken in Kate Moss many times over, musicians, politicians and Queen Elizabeth II, and alongside them he has made advertising campaigns, music videos and films and published many books. He founded Hunger magazine in 2011 and runs his own studio in London.

His prints are sold as editions, usually signed and numbered, through galleries and exhibitions, in sizes that range from small to very large. As with most contemporary photography, the edition, the size and the condition decide a print's value more than the fame of the sitter alone, and a print that comes with its certificate or gallery paperwork is much easier to place. Magazine pages, posters and book plates are a different and far smaller market. Large prints, especially face-mounted or framed behind acrylic, need care: scratches, creases and light damage are expensive to put right at that scale.
