Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Richard Pettibone (1938–2024) was born in Alhambra, California, and took an MFA at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1962. That year Andy Warhol's first exhibition of Campbell's Soup Cans, at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, set the direction of his work, and he began making his own soup cans, close to Warhol's and stamped with Warhol's name as well as his own. Marcel Duchamp's retrospective in Pasadena in 1963 inspired him too. From his first major exhibition, at the Ferus Gallery in 1965, he made small, meticulous copies of paintings by Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella, and of sculptures such as Warhol's Brillo Boxes and Duchamp's readymades, questioning what originality and authorship mean in modern art. In the 1970s he also made photorealist paintings.
His works are small by design, so they are easily damaged at the corners and edges and should be framed and stored with care. Titles name the work copied and its date, and labels from the galleries that sold them help to establish when Pettibone made his version.
