Roby Dwi Antono was born in Central Java in 1990 and is self-taught. The paintings put wide-eyed, solemn children alongside hybrid animals and dinosaurs in carefully rendered, quiet compositions that owe something to Renaissance portraiture and something to Japanese pop surrealism — an idiom sometimes called Rob-surrealism after him. The mood is consistently uneasy rather than whimsical.
