What a work by Hurvin Anderson is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Hurvin Anderson was born in Handsworth, Birmingham, in 1965, the youngest of eight children and the only one born in Britain after his parents came from Jamaica in the 1960s. He studied at Wimbledon College of Art, graduating in 1994, and took an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 1998. He works from photographs and memory. His recurring subjects are the barbershops of Britain's Caribbean communities, in the Peter's series of interiors that grew from a painting of 2002, and dense Caribbean landscapes seen through foliage, fences and grilles. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2017, and in 2026 Tate Britain gave him his first major survey, with more than eighty paintings.

Anderson's paintings range from small works on vellum to canvases that fill a wall, and many of the larger ones are in museums; works on paper and studies come up more often. Exhibition history and provenance through his galleries are what a buyer checks first.

Handsworth, Peter's and the Turner Prize

Tate Britain showed him in its Art Now series in 2009, the year the Studio Museum in Harlem showed the Peter's series, and the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham held Reporting Back in 2013.

His Country Club paintings of golf courses in Jamaica, and the Backdrop series, both turn on the gap between the Caribbean as a place and as an image.
