Bio
Salman Toor was born in Lahore in 1983 and went to Aitchison College there before studying at Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 2006, and taking an MFA at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2009. He lives in New York and became an American citizen in 2019. His paintings, often small and washed in a greenish light, show imagined young brown, South Asian, queer men in New York apartments, bars, airports and family homes, painted with a fluency that draws on European painters from Van Dyck to Watteau. His first museum solo exhibition, How Will I Know, was at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2020 and 2021, and the Frick Collection hung his Museum Boys beside two Vermeers in 2021.
Toor's paintings are placed carefully by his galleries, so those that reach auction are checked for provenance and exhibition history; drawings and works on paper are more common.
