Sandra Chevrier is a Canadian artist based in Montreal. Her best-known series, Cages, paints closely observed women's faces and overlays them with fragments of comic-book panels — superheroes mid-fight, speech bubbles, explosions — so that the imagery sits across the face like a mask or a cage. The work turns on the gap between the heroic, idealised figures of comics and the expectations placed on real women.
Original paintings, many incorporating collaged comic pages, lead, and there is a substantial run of prints and editions, often in several variants. For editions, the edition size, the variant and any hand-finishing distinguish otherwise similar sheets, and the numbering and signature should be photographed. Works that include paper collage need care with light and humidity, since the comic fragments can fade or yellow at a different rate from the paint around them.
