Ryan Travis Christian was born in Illinois in 1983 and works almost entirely in graphite on paper, in dense black-and-white compositions that borrow the vocabulary of early American animation — rubber-hose limbs, radiating lines, checkerboard grounds, the visual shorthand of a Fleischer cartoon — and push it towards abstraction and unease. The labour is conspicuous: these are built up by hand over long periods and the surface shows it.
Works on paper are the market, which makes condition central rather than incidental. Graphite burnishes, smudges and offsets onto glazing if it is framed in contact, and the dense worked blacks are exactly where handling shows; these should be framed with a spacer and to conservation standard. Light and acidity act on the paper as they would on any drawing. Editions and printed work exist but the unique drawings are the substance of the practice.
