Tomás Sánchez was born in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba, in 1948 and studied in Havana. A long-standing practitioner of meditation, he paints landscapes that are at once minutely detailed and imaginary — dense tropical forests, still lagoons, solitary figures and, in counterpoint, landscapes of heaped refuse. He has long lived and worked outside Cuba, in Costa Rica and the United States.
Paintings in acrylic on canvas lead, with drawings and a smaller number of prints. The scale and finish of a picture are much of what separates the major works from lesser ones, and title, date and dimensions matched to the artist's records identify a work. Latin American painting has an established, specialist market, so provenance and authentication through recognised sources matter, and the dealer or gallery history should be documented.
