What a work by Tony Bevan is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Tony Bevan was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1951. He studied at Bradford School of Art from 1968 to 1971, Goldsmiths' College from 1971 to 1974 and the Slade School of Fine Art from 1974 to 1976. His graphic paintings and drawings are built from jet-black charcoal and pigment-rich acrylic, in networks of lacerated vertical and diagonal lines set against vivid red, scorched orange or cobalt blue, and his subjects run from enlarged, psychologically charged heads and self-portraits to architectural forms such as corridors and towers. He came to prominence in the 1980s, in Before It Hits the Floor at the ICA and Problems of Picturing at the Serpentine Gallery in 1982 and the British Art Show in 1984, and held his first American solo exhibitions at Ronald Feldman Gallery in New York in 1988 and L.A. Louver in 1989. He has had solo exhibitions at the ICA, the Staatsgalerie Moderner Kunst in Munich, the Whitechapel Gallery and the Israel Museum, and a major retrospective at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern in 2005. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2007.

Besides paintings in acrylic and charcoal on canvas he makes drawings and, since 2006, monoprints and other prints. Charcoal can smudge and shed, so check the surface closely and keep works on paper behind glazing. Keep the title, with its PC number, the date and the gallery invoice with the work.
