Jack Vettriano valuation

Painted The Singing Butler, was rejected by the establishment, and outsold nearly everyone.

Jack Vettriano was born Jack Hoggan at Methil in Fife in 1951, left school at sixteen for the mines, and began painting in his twenties after a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolours. He was entirely self-taught, was turned down by Edinburgh University's art school, and had two paintings accepted by the Royal Scottish Academy in 1989, both selling on the first day. The Singing Butler — a couple dancing on a beach attended by a butler and a maid with umbrellas — became the best-selling art print in Britain. Critical hostility was constant and public. He was made an OBE and died in 2025.

The gap between the original paintings, which are unique oils and comparatively few, and the printed output, which is vast, is the whole of the practical question. Signed limited-edition prints published in his lifetime are pencil-signed and numbered with a publisher's blindstamp; open-edition posters, canvas transfers and reproductions carry only the printed signature and are constantly presented as the former. Some early works were signed Hoggan, before he took his mother's name. The estate is now the reference for authenticity, and imitations exist in number.

Selling a work

We represent the seller rather than the auction house: comparing houses and sale dates, negotiating the seller's terms, and keeping the paperwork and remittance in your name. What sets the value of a Jack Vettriano sets out what we look at first.
