Roy Lichtenstein valuation

Painted comic panels by hand, Ben-Day dots and all, and made them enormous.

Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York in 1923, taught for years at Rutgers and elsewhere, and in 1961 painted Look Mickey, reportedly after his son pointed at a comic and said he could not draw as well as that. What followed were the war and romance paintings — a single enlarged comic panel, its printing dots hand-painted through a stencil, its speech balloon intact — which were attacked on publication as plagiarism and are now among the most recognisable images of the century. He went on to reprocess Monet, Picasso, Mondrian and Art Deco in the same manner, and made sculpture and murals until his death in 1997.

Lichtenstein was a major printmaker and the editions, published principally by Gemini G.E.L., Leo Castelli and Tyler Graphics, are the bulk of what most sellers hold; Corlett's catalogue raisonne of the prints is the necessary reference and identifies edition, publisher and state. The flat unmodulated colour and the printed dots make fading and any surface intervention immediately visible. Posters, exhibition announcements and unauthorised reproductions circulate in enormous numbers and are routinely offered as prints. The Roy Lichtenstein Foundation holds the archive.

Neither the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation nor the estate authenticates works, and they state plainly that a place in their catalogue is not a guarantee. The catalogue itself, published online in 2023 and recording more than five thousand works in every medium, is free to search and is the first check for any painting, drawing or sculpture. For prints, Corlett's catalogue remains the working reference.

Lichtenstein signed many exhibition posters and announcements, and a signed poster is often mistaken for a print. The difference shows in how it was made and what it says: a poster is usually offset printed, carries lettering for the gallery or museum, and is unnumbered. Signed posters are collected and have a market of their own, which sits well below the editioned prints, and the signature on one should be checked like any other.

Leo Castelli began showing him in 1961, and his first one-man show at the gallery, in 1962, was bought by collectors before it opened. Drowning Girl, painted in 1963 from a story in DC Comics' Secret Hearts drawn by Tony Abruzzo, is at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1964 he became the first American to show at the Tate, and the Guggenheim gave him retrospectives in 1969 and 1994.

The public commissions came in the 1980s and 1990s: Brushstrokes in Flight, 26 feet high, for the airport at Columbus, Ohio; the five-storey Mural with Blue Brushstroke at the Equitable Center in New York; El Cap de Barcelona in 1992; and the 53-foot enamel Times Square Mural in the subway in 1994. He painted a BMW for the Art Car series in 1977, and the DreamWorks Records logo was his last completed project. In October 2026 the Whitney opened Like New, his first full retrospective in more than thirty years.

Selling a work

We represent the seller rather than the auction house: comparing houses and sale dates, negotiating the seller's terms, and keeping the paperwork and remittance in your name. What sets the value of a Roy Lichtenstein sets out what we look at first.
