What a work by Alex Israel is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Alex Israel was born in Los Angeles in 1982 and grew up in Westwood. He graduated from Yale University in 2003 and took an MFA at the University of Southern California in 2010. Los Angeles, and its image of itself, is his subject. He is best known for large airbrushed paintings of colour gradients and Californian skies, for self-portraits painted on shaped fibreglass panels, and for installations made from movie-house props. In 2011 and 2012 he made a web series, As It Lays, in which he interviewed Los Angeles celebrities, and since 2016 he has worked from a studio on the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank.

The paintings and shaped self-portraits are unique, and he also makes editions and objects, so the edition number and certificate should be checked. Airbrushed surfaces show every scuff and fingerprint, so handling, framing and condition matter a great deal.
