What a work by Callum Innes is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Callum Innes was born in Edinburgh in 1962. He studied drawing and painting at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen from 1980 to 1984 and completed a postgraduate degree at Edinburgh College of Art in 1985. His abstract paintings are made by layering pigment onto the canvas and then removing much of the oil paint with washes of turpentine, so that opaque areas of colour sit beside translucent, washed ones. The Exposed Paintings are the best-known series; others include the Isolated Forms, Agitated Verticals, Resonance and Monologue works, and more recently tondos on round plywood panels. In 1992 he showed at the ICA in London and at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1995, and won the NatWest Prize for Painting in 1998 and the Jerwood Prize for Painting in 2002. His work is in the collections of Tate, the Guggenheim and the Centre Pompidou. He lives and works in Edinburgh, and is represented by Frith Street Gallery in London.

Besides unique oil paintings on canvas and panel there are watercolours and gouaches on paper, and editioned prints: photopolymer intaglio prints, lithographs made with Edinburgh Printmakers, and etchings printed in Barcelona. For a print, check the edition number, signature, printer and paper. The thin, washed surfaces of the paintings show any scuff, mark or retouching. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with it.
