What a work by Ali Banisadr is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Ali Banisadr was born in Tehran in 1976 and moved to California with his family as a child, after growing up through the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. In San Francisco he studied psychology and painted graffiti, and in 2000 he moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts and then the New York Academy of Art. His paintings are crowded, restless fields in which hybrid figures and creatures form and dissolve, worked in small, precise strokes against looser, gestural passages, so that no single figure takes the lead. He has said that his memories of the war are half abstract and half recognisable, and that the sound of things comes to him as colour, a synaesthesia he translates into paint. Hieronymus Bosch is the painter he is most often compared with, and in 2019 the Het Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch, Bosch's city, gave him a solo exhibition.

Oil paintings on canvas or linen, from small panels to large canvases, are what most buyers look for. He also makes etchings and other prints in numbered editions, along with drawings and works on paper, and the edition, the printer and the paper should be checked against the published details. His work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Centre Pompidou, and Thaddaeus Ropac represents him; a gallery invoice and the date of the work are the first things a buyer asks for.

Tehran, New York and The Alchemist

His first solo exhibition came in 2008, and he was in Love Me/Love Me Not, a show of contemporary art from Azerbaijan and its neighbours at the Venice Biennale of 2013. The Benaki Museum in Athens and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford showed him in 2020.

Ali Banisadr: The Alchemist, the first survey of his work at an American museum, opened at the Katonah Museum of Art in 2025 and moved to the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 2026.
