Phyllida Barlow valuation

British sculptor of vast, rough-hewn structures in cardboard, plaster and cement, who represented Britain at Venice in 2017.

Phyllida Barlow (1944–2023) was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in London, where the bomb damage she saw as a child fed much of her later work.

What a work by Phyllida Barlow is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Phyllida Barlow (1944–2023) was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in London, where the bomb damage she saw as a child fed much of her later work. She studied at Chelsea College of Art from 1960 to 1963 and at the Slade from 1963 to 1966, and taught for more than forty years, much of it at the Slade, where her students included Rachel Whiteread. She made sculpture from cheap, everyday materials, cardboard, polystyrene, scrim and cement, built into large, precarious structures that look as if they could topple at any moment. Wider recognition came late in her career: in 2014 she filled the Duveen Galleries at Tate Britain, in 2016 she was shortlisted for the first Hepworth Prize for Sculpture, and in 2017 she represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale with her series Folly.

Besides the large installations she made freestanding and wall-mounted sculptures of more modest size, and many drawings and works on paper. The materials are fragile by design, so a buyer will want to know how a sculpture has been stored and moved, and whether anything has been repaired. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with it.
