Andre Brasilier was born at Saumur in 1929, the son of two painters, and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Maurice Brianchon, winning the Prix de Rome in 1953. Saumur is a cavalry town and horses have run through the work ever since — riders in a wood, a horse alone in snow, hunting parties reduced to a few marks. The other recurring subjects are his wife Chantal, orchards, and musicians in performance. The manner has stayed remarkably constant: thin, fluid oil laid over a light ground, drawing kept to a minimum, and a palette that carries the whole picture. He exhibited internationally for seven decades and died in September 2026, aged 96.
Brasilier's market is strongest in Asia, particularly Japan and Korea, which has shaped both where the work sells and what sells best. The oils on canvas are unique and are led by the equestrian and snow subjects at larger scale. There is also a very substantial lithographic output published over decades, in signed and numbered editions, and it is important not to conflate the two: the prints are numerous and the paintings are not. Signature is on the face; dating is often only on the reverse or the stretcher.
The prizes and the paintings
Brasilier won the Prix Florence Blumenthal in 1952, the Prix de Rome for painting in 1953 and the Prix Charles-Morellet at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture in 1961. His work is in the permanent collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brest.
