Bio
Bill Brandt was born in Hamburg in 1904, spent time in Vienna and then in Paris as an assistant in Man Ray's studio, and settled in London in 1934, where he set about photographing a country he had chosen rather than inherited. The English at Home and A Night in London recorded class and interior life with a documentary eye; the shelter photographs made for the Ministry of Information during the Blitz are among the defining images of the period. In the 1950s he turned to nudes, using a wide-angle police camera with an almost infinite depth of field, published as Perspective of Nudes in 1961. He died in 1983.
Brandt reprinted his own earlier negatives in later decades and did so with markedly harder contrast, blacks blocking up and whites bleached out, so a 1930s image printed in the 1960s is a visually different object from the vintage print. Which of the two you have is the first question and it decides everything after it. Verso stamps, pencil annotations and the estate's later printing all need reading together, and the paper's condition — silvering at the edges, surface abrasion, old mount residue — is read alongside them.

The books, and the exhibitions
Brandt's books are collected in their own right: The English at Home in 1936, A Night in London in 1938, Camera in London in 1948, Literary Britain in 1951, Perspective of Nudes in 1961 and Shadow of Light, a selection of his best work, in 1966. The Museum of Modern Art gave him a retrospective in 1969, curated by John Szarkowski.
The National Portrait Gallery showed his portraits in 1982, and Tate Britain's Bill Brandt: Inside the Mirror followed in 2022. For a print, the book in which an image first appeared is a useful check on the date of the picture, though not on when the print itself was made.
