Hebru Brantley was born in Chicago in 1981 and his central character, Flyboy, is a goggled figure derived in part from the Tuskegee Airmen and intended as the kind of heroic image he did not see growing up. The work draws on graffiti, on Japanese animation and on American comics, and moves between painting, sculpture and large public installation.
Unique paintings and mixed-media works on canvas and board lead, with sculpture in editions — resin and fibreglass figures in particular — and screenprint and giclée editions below them. The sculpture is where most identification work sits: editions run at various sizes and finishes, and the base markings and certificate are what separate them. The resin and painted surfaces chip and scuff, and unlike bronze they do not forgive. A large volume of collaborative product also circulates and is not studio work.
