Baldur Helgason was born in Reykjavik in 1990 and works between Iceland and Los Angeles. The paintings take the visual language of mid-century American animation — rubber-hose limbs, gloved hands, simplified faces — and drain the comedy out of it, leaving characters who look tired, blank or quietly defeated. The flat, confident handling comes from a background in illustration and design.
Unique oil and acrylic paintings on canvas and panel lead, with works on paper and a small body of editions below. This is an early-career market that appreciated very quickly, so where and when a work was acquired bears on a valuation as much as what it is, and primary gallery documentation is worth locating. The surfaces are flat and evenly painted with large areas of single colour, which shows scuffs, stretcher-bar marks and uneven varnish more readily than a worked surface would.
