Chantal Joffe
Paints women, her daughter and herself, fast and very large, from photographs and life.
Chantal Joffe was born in St Albans, Vermont in 1969, grew up in England, and studied at Glasgow and the Royal College of Art. She paints women almost exclusively — friends, fashion models taken from magazines, her mother, her sister, and above all her daughter Esme, whom she has painted repeatedly through childhood and adolescence, alongside a long run of unsparing self-portraits. The paint is applied fast and wet, at a scale that frequently exceeds life size, with proportions deliberately left awkward. She was elected a Royal Academician in 2013 and works in London.
A strong British market with growing international reach, led by the large oils on board and canvas; the paintings of her daughter and the self-portraits are the most sought subjects. Joffe often paints on board, and large boards warp and are vulnerable at the corners, so support condition matters. She works quickly and the output is substantial, which keeps the market well supplied. There are also numerous smaller oils on paper and card, and a modest number of print editions. Signature and date are usually on the reverse.
