Dave White is a British painter from Liverpool whose subjects have moved from the sneaker — a body of work that made his name in the 2000s and connected him to streetwear culture — through to wildlife, and particularly endangered species and birds of prey. The handling is consistent across the subjects: heavily loaded, drip-laden oil and acrylic that stays legible as paint while describing the animal precisely.
Unique paintings on canvas lead, with watercolours and works on paper alongside, and a substantial body of giclée and screenprint editions. The editions are numerous and issued in different sizes and papers, so identifying which release a sheet belongs to is routine but necessary work. Condition for the heavily impasto paintings is a real consideration: thick drip surfaces are vulnerable to knocks and to poor transit, and any damage there is conspicuous. Certificates accompany the editions.
Liverpool, the sneaker paintings and Nike
White studied fine art at Liverpool John Moores University from 1991, working in the studio John Lennon had once used, and after graduating in 1994 showed in the Northern Graduates exhibition at the Royal College of Art. He was with the Connaught Brown gallery for five years and is now represented by Gusford.
The sneaker series, begun in 2002, is the work that made his name, and Nike holds a group of the paintings in its corporate collection. Planes, Tanks and Automatics, at the Truman Brewery during Frieze week in 2008, turned to military imagery, and the Apex series of great white sharks opened at Gusford in 2014. In 2016 he designed two colourways of the Nike Air Max 95 based on British wildlife.
