Martin Whatson is a Norwegian artist working from Oslo whose signature device is a dense coloured scribble set against monochrome photographic or architectural imagery — decaying walls, industrial structures, classical figures — so that the colour reads as something growing back rather than as decoration. The motif is consistent enough that the work is recognisable at a glance, which is part of why the editions move as they do.
Editions are a large part of this market and are issued in numerous variants: standard impressions, hand-finished, spray-embellished, and small runs on unusual supports including metal and concrete. Those variants are not interchangeable and the difference between them is most of the valuation, so edition marking, signature and any hand-work need to be recorded properly.
