D*Face
British street artist who turned American comic-book romance into skulls and wings.
D*Face is Dean Stockton, born in London in 1978, who came to street art through skateboard graphics, punk record sleeves and Mad magazine rather than through graffiti writing. He put up stickers and posters around London from the late 1990s and built a vocabulary out of appropriated Americana: the swooning heroines of 1960s romance comics given hollow eyes and exposed skulls, winged eyeballs, dollar signs and pop stars rendered as corpses. He founded the StolenSpace gallery in East London in 2005, which became one of the significant venues for the scene, and has painted large murals internationally.
The print market is the substantial one and is dominated by screenprints published in editions from around fifty to several hundred, many of them hand-finished or produced in multiple colourways, so identifying edition, colourway and any hand embellishment is the first task. Pencil signature, numbering and the studio blindstamp should all be present. Original works on canvas and hand-painted multiples exist in far smaller numbers. Street pieces removed from walls appear occasionally and carry the usual difficulties of ownership and of condition after removal.
